STRATEGY PUBLIC dá início a uma nova série no catálogo de livros de arquitectura da a+t. Apesar de deter algumas semelhanças com o estilo visual da anterior publicação desta editora, o manual de análise urbana intitulado THE PUBLIC CHANCE, este último livro aborda o tema das estratégias de projecto – a relação estreita entre as manifestações de arquitectura e o conjunto de objectivos que estão na base da sua conceptualização.

É uma abordagem pouco usual considerando os padrões editoriais, mais convencionais, de investigação e análise de arquitectura. O projecto final é usualmente entendido como o ponto de partida para a busca de significado teórico. Aqui somos confrontados com um modelo de investigação diverso: o escrutínio das estratégias que antecedem o processo de desenho, procurando clarificar as carências, os propósitos e as metodologias seguidas, com vista a traduzir conceitos abstractos em soluções práticas.
STRATEGY PUBLIC apresenta assim um vislumbre sobre aspectos pouco reflectidos na discussão crítica da arquitectura, tendo em conta os diversos planos de intervenção que com ela interferem: económico, social, ambiental. O primeiro passo nesta investigação é formulado sobre os objectivos e as considerações programáticas. São igualmente analisados os factores exteriores tais como as especificidades do sítio, preocupações de sustentabilidade, as particularidades dos utilizadores, as restrições orçamentais e, finalmente, o modo como todos eles se tornam determinantes no desenvolvimento da solução.

Mais de 20 obras de arquitectura paisagista e design urbano estão representadas neste livro, sendo cada uma delas analisada em função das suas estratégias particulares e do resultado final. Trata-se do livro mais detalhado da a+t, contendo desenhos técnicos meticulosos e diagramas informativos que pormenorizam cada aspecto da sua construção.
Em alguns projectos encontramos a necessidade de reinterpretar o território existente, adaptar superfícies, introduzir novos materiais ou explorar soluções de iluminação inventivas. Outros abordam a necessidade de conectar ou activar espaços intersticiais, introduzir novas funções e temas ou lidar com questões sensíveis como a gestão de percursos de drenagem pluvial ou de áreas de plantação. STRATEGY PUBLIC opens a new series in a+t’s architectural catalogue. Although it follows a visual and diagrammatic style similar to their previous publication, the noteworthy urban landscape analysis guide titled THE PUBLIC CHANCE, this latest book is more focused on the subject of project design strategies – the fine balance between architectural manifestations and the primary set of objectives that guide their creation.

It’s an unusual approach considering other forms of conventional theoretical research. The finished project is often the critical starting point in the search for meaning. Here we are confronted with an alternate investigation method: an attempt to scrutinize the strategies that precede the design process. To understand the methodologies through which concepts are put into practice. STRATEGY PUBLIC offers an outlook into different planes of intervention: economic, social, environmental, formal. It starts by inquiring project objectives, from the seminal programmatic considerations to the concepts through which these are translated into form. Additionally, external factors are taken into consideration – such as the specificities of the site, the ecological concerns, the target users, the financial constraints of the operation – and the ways these become determinant to the development of the project.

More than 20 built works of urban design and landscape architecture are represented and each one of them is analysed regarding these particular strategies and their subsequent conceptual outcome. This is definitely a+t’s most detailed book to date, containing meticulous technical drawings and informative diagrams that dissect every single project. Some address the need to reinterpret existing landscapes, to adapt surfaces, introduce new materials and explore inventive lighting solutions. Others are focused on the need to connect and activate interstitial spaces, to introduce new functions and themes or deal with sensitive issues such as rainwater and plantation management. These may range from ambitious, large scale operations, to projects that deal with more prosaic considerations such as spending cuts or the need to reuse pre-existing materials and structures. The careful selection and diversity of examples is ultimately what makes STRATEGY PUBLIC such an outstanding learning tool and a unique design resource manual, a book that every urban designer and landscape architect should definitely take into consideration.

As new forms of processing architectural design take over the way we approach, think and communicate architecture, the task of sketching seems to take a step back from our daily routines. And yet hand drawing has always been one of our most treasured tools, guiding us in the process of constructing meaning from the bits and pieces of life, building a travel log or capturing the details of the city and its inhabitants.
The collection of drawings by Álvaro Siza, now published under the title Sketches at dinner, presents an opportunity to discover the intimate dimension of his personal expression. In Siza’s own words, drawing is project, desire, liberation, chronicle and communication, doubt and discovery, reflection and creation, contained gesture and utopia.

Hybrids III

Hybrids III is the latest magazine from a+t architecture publishers.

Hybrids III é o mais recentemente lançamento da editora a+t, centrando-se no tema dos edifícios de uso misto com ocupação residencial.
Os Híbridos Residenciais são tipologicamente antagónicos a uma das mais paradigmáticas criações do movimento construtivista: o Condensador Social. As duas tipologias têm origem no período avant-garde do primeiro quarto do século 20. O Condensador Social, no entanto, nasce de uma visão ideológica do Estado sobre a realidade social, vindo a configurar um modelo de habitação particularmente influente no contexto europeu do período pós-guerra.
O Híbrido é originário de um conjunto de circunstâncias muito diferentes, de raízes firmadas no capitalismo americano. Onde a cidade europeia era guiada pela ideologia, a cidade americana era um palco para o negócio e a especulação. O híbrido encorajava o cosmopolitanismo e o contacto urbano, materializando um novo paradigma de cidade democrática; uma cidade nascida de múltiplas forças, integrando diferentes programas, diferentes promotores e diferentes utilizadores.
Hybrids III apresenta um trabalho de investigação sobre a integração da função habitacional em edifícios de uso misto, acompanhando uma selecção de 20 novos projectos que reforçam a interacção de uma variedade de usos urbanos em conjugação com actividades residenciais privadas. Hybrids III is the latest double-issue from a+t’s Hybrids Series, focusing on Residential Mixed-Use Buildings. Residential Hybrids are deemed as typological opposites to one of the most paradigmatic creations of the constructivist movement: the Social Condenser. Both typologies share their origins in the avant-garde era of the first quarter of the 20th Century. The Social Condenser, however, was born from State centered ideals under a recently created Soviet Union and would later become an extremely influential model for social housing in the European context, particularly after World War II. The Hybrid was originated from a very distinctive set of circumstances, with its roots firmly embedded in the American capitalist system. Whereas the European city was guided by ideology, the American city was an outcome of the free flowing economy, a playground for profitability and speculation. The hybrid encouraged urban contact and cosmopolitanism, becoming consequential to a new paradigm of democratic city; a city born from multiple driving forces, integrating different programmes, different developers and different users.
Hybrids III presents an extensive investigation on the issue of housing integration in mixed developments, followed by a selection of 20 new projects that encourage the interaction of a variety of urban uses while also successfully combining private residential activities within the public realm. A indústria de habitação é a área de produção arquitectónica mais vulnerável aos efeitos da crise económica. Isto tem, como consequência, a redução do volume de trabalho à disposição das firmas de arquitectura, bem como o encerramento de empresas na área de construção em todo o mundo. A capacidade de inovação é agora uma necessidade absoluta, não apenas para responder aos requisitos contemporâneos de eficiência e sustentabilidade ambiental mas também para cumprir exigências de racionalidade custo-benefício nas soluções para estes novos problemas.

HoCo – Density Housing Construction & Costs é um novo livro que reúne uma vasta selecção de edifícios de construção recente. Trata-se do terceiro volume na série Density produzida pela editora de arquitectura a+t, e dá a conhecer uma análise comparada dos projectos baseando-se em definições relevantes como contexto urbano, capacidade residencial, modelo de promoção (público ou privado) e, mais curiosamente, custos de edificação. Cada projecto é apresentado com recurso a um conjunto de fotografias, desenhos e detalhes técnicos que permitem obter um entendimento aprofundado dos sistemas construtivos aplicados.

HoCo procura ainda estabelecer um debate em torno da sistematização na indústria da construção. Ainda hoje este sector preserva características próprias de metodologias artesanais, através da congregação de artífices de especialidades segmentadas reunidos no tecto de um mesmo empreendimento. No entanto, as exigências para estabelecer soluções viáveis no desenho material, eficiência energética e sustentabilidade global da produção arquitectónica são cada vez maiores, bem como as obrigações de manter todas essas tarefas dentro dos orçamentos estipulados. Os arquitectos têm assim de conjugar duas realidades aparentemente opostas: a eficiência linear da produção industrial com a imaginação própria de um artífice. Este livro apresenta um conjunto exemplar de projectos que revelam esse brilho criativo, propondo associações materiais atípicas e soluções de design capazes de obter os melhores resultados, colocando a inovação novamente no centro do debate arquitectónico do nosso tempo.

The house building industry is the area of architectural production that’s more vulnerable to the effects of the economic crisis. It means that, all around the world, architectural studios are being downsized and construction companies are shutting down. Innovation is therefore needed not only to address the needs of contemporary life, merging the requirements of efficiency and environmental sustainability, but also to meet the demands for rational, budget-wise solutions to these new challenges.

HoCo – Density Housing Construction & Costs is a new book that gathers a wide selection of recently built housing projects. This is the third volume in a+t’s Density Series, presenting a comparative analysis of several key issues like urban insertion, dwelling capacity, promotion model (public or private) and, most interestingly, construction costs. Each project is featured with a comprehensive set of photos, drawings and building details that allow for a better understanding of the technical systems applied in its construction.

HoCo raises a debate on the issue of systematization within the construction industry. The building industry remains, to this day, a large-scale multi-disciplinary work of craftsmanship. But we now face the need to establish viable solutions regarding material design, energy efficiency and overall sustainability in architecture, and keep it on budget. Architects have to merge two opposing realities: the lean efficiency of industrialized production with the imaginative mind of a craftsman. O último deserto

Há mundos que se perdem. Pelo menos, para o sempre que duram as nossas vidas. Talvez o mundo perdure para lá das frequências rádio, telemóveis, internet e GPS. Mas esse mundo estará para sempre perdido no tempo que nos é dado, eternamente curto.

Em Biplane, o escritor aviador Richard Bach escreveu sobre um desses mundos. É um belo livro de viagem, daqueles para ler na edição paperback na língua original, e de que hoje me resta uma pálida lembrança com rugas e nódoas de inter-rail. É a história de uma viagem de avião, de costa a costa, num biplano Detroit Ryan Speedster, modelo Parks P-2A de 1929 – porque nestas coisas os pormenores são sempre importantes. Melhor, é a história de uma viagem a bordo de uma máquina do espaço e do tempo, aos primórdios da aviação a motor, da navegação à vista, de ventos cruzados fatais e de aterragens destemidas ao pôr-do-sol em campos perdidos da grande América. É uma viagem fascinante, de vida ou morte, como só sabem contar aqueles que viajaram para muito longe e de lá, de alguma forma, nunca mais voltaram.
Saint-Exupéry é um desses homens, perdido que andou no deserto mais profundo da Líbia e no frio mais cruel dos Andes onde padeceria a vida o seu grande amigo Henri Guillaumet. Essa grande história imortalizou o escritor francês, igualmente apaixonado pela aviação, no livro Terre des Hommes, testamento de muitas viagens e outros tantos mundos perdidos.

De certo modo, é também disso que escreve Miguel Sousa Tavares no seu mais recente pequeno livro, No Teu Deserto. Pois que nos esquecemos que o manto de tecnologia nos consome e retira mundos ao mundo, com a subtil rapidez com que os telemóveis e os GPS processam os seus automatismos para encontrar redes invisíveis. Existirá o deserto ainda, hostil e profundo, que nos reduza à dimensão humana de estar só no vazio?
Sousa Tavares descreve uma derradeira viagem ao vazio onde duas almas se podem encontrar, apenas e só. Essa viagem conhecíamos já de uma das suas crónicas do Sul, que regista exactamente o trilho da Pista para Tamanrasset. A sua companheira de aventura, Cláudia, está lá nas entrelinhas. No Teu Deserto encerra essa bela, terrível, inesquecível viagem. Ao último deserto, sem regresso.

Hybrids II is a new magazine from a+t architecture publishers.

Hybrids II é o mais recente lançamento da editora a+t. Trata-se do segundo volume da série dedicada a este tipo específico de construção, desta vez abordando o tema dos edifícios de uso misto em desenvolvimento horizontal.
A revista apresenta um ensaio teórico que contextualiza a evolução das tipologias de edifício híbrido através da história da arquitectura do século XX, desde a invenção do arranha-céus às mega-estruturas utópicas concebidas pela Archizoom na década de sessenta. São ainda publicados diversos projectos - a maior parte em construção na Europa e na Ásia – expostos e analisados através de desenhos técnicos e diagramas.

Hybrids II is the latest launch from a+t architecture publishers, focusing on Low-rise Mixed-use Buildings. This is the second issue in a+t’s Hybrids series and features a good selection of projects - most of them currently under construction in Europe and Asia - carefully presented and analysed through technical drawings and diagrams. The magazine also includes an extensive theoretical essay that contextualizes the evolution of hybrid typologies through time, from the invention of the skyscraper to the utopian mega-structures conceived by Archizoom in the 1960s.

O espaço público desempenha um papel determinante no ambiente construído, estabelecendo-se como uma afirmação democrática do equilíbrio entre a dimensão pública e privada da cidade. A sua importância no contexto das sociedades contemporâneas extravasa a função de identidade simbólica, oferecendo um território para as manifestações colectivas, tanto como espaço para a expressão individual como um palco aberto para a vida da comunidade.

The Public Chance: New Urban Landscapes
Public space plays a determinant role in the urban environment, standing as an affirmation of democracy in the balance between the public and private dimensions of the city. Its importance in the context of contemporary societies goes beyond a statement of symbolic identity, providing a territory for collective manifestations of life, either as a playground for individual expression or an open stage for the community. In the new context of a global economy, unforeseen challenges are being inflicted upon the state’s capacity as a promoter of the public domain. New actors come into play as private interests assume a decisive role in the urban sphere.
