The Belly of an Architect

O The Observer tem um artigo sobre Daniel Libeskind, com o nome sugestivo de A Barriga de um Arquitecto. Alimento para o espírito, poderia dizer-se, uma vez que o texto se encontra na secção de gastronomia. Aí têm. Libeskind fala da sua infância em Nova Iorque e a forte influência que a sua mãe teve sobre ele enquanto crescia para se tornar arquitecto.
“Queres ser um artista?" – perguntou enquanto via o seu filho desenhar sentado à mesa da cozinha. “Para acabar esfomeado num sótão qualquer? É essa a vida que queres para ti? (…) Sê um arquitecto. Podes sempre fazer arte em arquitectura, mas não podes fazer arquitectura nas artes.”
Assim foi que o rapaz cresceu para se tornar num dos mais bem sucedidos arquitectos do seu tempo. E, confessa Libeskind, que algumas das suas melhores ideias foram desenhadas em guardanapos de papel à mesa de jantar. Prossegue para falar da sua vida familiar e as suas origens de uma forma pouco vulgar em arquitectos que se tornaram tão grandes nomes empresariais. “A arquitectura, como a comida, é sobre os seres humanos que nela participam”. Seguem-se analogias interessantes, ainda que a sua leitura não seja recomendada de estômago vazio.

The Observer has an article on Daniel Libeskind, conspicuously titled The Belly of an Architect. Food for thought, one might say, as it’s filed under the food section. So there you have it. Libeskind goes on talking about his infancy in New York and the strong influence his mother had on him as he grew up to become an architect.
“You want to be an artist?” – she asked as she looked at her son drawing at the kitchen table. “To end up hungry in a garret somewhere? This is the life you want for yourself? (…) Be an architect. You can always do art in architecture, but you can't do architecture in art.”
So it was that the boy would grow to become one of the most successful architects of his time. And so says Libeskind, that some of his best ideas were drawn on napkins at the dinner table. He goes on talking about his family life and origins in a way we don’t often see of architects who became such big corporate names. “Architecture, like food, is about the human beings involved“. Interesting analogies follow, although it should not be read on an empty stomach.

Com o lançamento do tema CO2 Free pela UIA - Union International d’Architectes para a celebração do Dia Mundial da Arquitectura 2007, deparamo-nos com um problema demasiado amplo para se enquadrar numa tradicional postura estéril de discurso fechado para a classe. Pensar cidade e fazer cidade é um acto de cidadania, e como tal deve ser aberta uma reflexão pública por parte dos vários agentes que a desenham.

Como dizia o arquitecto Pedro Campos Costa numa recente entrevista, “a sustentabilidade não é uma solução técnica, é uma solução política”, e como tal deve ser abordada a partir dessa perspectiva. Enquanto arquitectos não podemos estar preocupados apenas resolução tecnológica do problema -isso é seguramente feito de modo mais eficaz por outros especialistas - mas sim na coordenação de diferentes atitudes e pontos de vista, dando assim o nosso contributo na procura de soluções out of the box para uma ideia de cidade que,mais que sustentável, consiga ser mais eficaz em aspectos físicos e sociais.

Perhaps the architect has an obligation to have an utopian vision and at the same time an equal obligation to be realistic about the futility of these utopian ambitions. 3

Pensar, projectar e construir sustentavelmente tornou-se assim uma opção do arquitecto contemporâneo, possível e desejável num mundo cada vez menos saudável. Pensar com sentido comum é uma das melhores ferramentas para isso, e um instrumento de trabalho de qualquer profissional de arquitectura. Qualquer que seja o nosso papel na produção arquitectónica, um pensamento de Redução, Reutilização, Renovação e Reciclagem são importantes.

Propomos uma recolha de material variado sobre projectos e obras de carácter sustentável. Desenhos, Diagramas, Imagens de Referência, Fotos, etc. serão apresentados em formato digital -Powerpoint ou vídeo na Ordem dos Arquitectos no dia 1 de Outubro - Dia Mundial da Arquitectura.

David Byrne meets Philip Johnson

When the idea of modernism was brought to NY from Europe, much of its idealist utopian socialist baggage was left behind; it became, in America, mainly through the efforts of Johnson and his circle, a style rather than the structural and architectural equivalent of a political movement.

People in Glass Houses: David Byrne descobre os segredos da Glass House de Philip Johnson. Pelo meio, compara-a com as casas dos Trópicos e as cabanas de África. Algo assim. Mas faz um interessante retrato do homem por detrás da arquitectura. Byrne define a casa como um “cocktail lounge” modernista e conjectura sobre a natureza complexa de Johnson - um apologista imediato do modernismo como força poderosa que mudaria o mundo, para depois seguir o seu caminho pelos sabores do tempo em diferentes estilos. Com panache e um enorme ego. Como deve ser.

David Byrne meets Philip Johnson
People in Glass Houses: David Byrne uncovers the secrets of The Glass House by Philip Johnson. Along the way he compares it to the houses in the Tropics and the huts in Africa. Well, sort of. But he makes an interesting portrait of the man behind the architecture. He curiously defines the house as a modernist cocktail lounge, and wonders about Johnson’s complex nature – “a proselytizer and an advocate of styles”, an early believer of modernism as a powerful force that would change the world, who then followed his own path through the flavors of time into different styles. With panache and a huge ego. As it should be.

Portugal Air Show

O circo da aviação desceu à cidade com o Portugal Air Show 2007, que decorreu este fim-de-semana no Aeródromo Municipal de Évora. Deixo-vos algumas imagens. The flying circus came to town with the Portugal Air Show, that took place this weekend here in Évora. Here’s a few pictures.

A Storefront for Art and Architecture vai inaugurar no próximo dia 2 de Outubro a exposição The Copenhagen Experiments. O evento centra-se na apresentação de cinco projectos da firma BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group). São cinco visões contemporâneas sobre uma nova espécie de arquitectura urbana que explora diferentes tipologias de habitar.
O trabalho de Bjarke Ingels é uma das mais refrescantes lufadas de ar fresco a varrer a prática da arquitectura nesta década. Os projectos que tem desenvolvido manifestam particularidades simultaneamente locais – específicas do enquadramento regional, das realidades de mercado, da expectativa urbana e imobiliária – e de interesse global, pela abrangência dos seus métodos de projecto, as suas elaborações complexas e universais.
Os projectos em destaque: as muito publicadas VM Houses; o bloco habitacional MTN – Mountain Dwellings; o SCALA, biblioteca, centro de conferências e hotel; as LEGO Towers e o KLM – The Clover Block, apresentado recentemente aqui no blog.
A exposição estará aberta até ao dia 24 de Novembro. Os felizardos que estiverem em Nova Iorque não devem perder a oportunidade de visitar a Storefront – fica o repto para que a comunidade blogger portuguesa em Nova Iorque envie algumas fotografias, se for possível! Os restantes podem antes deliciar-se com o vídeo da montagem da maquete das torres LEGO; foi construída com 250.000 peças de Lego verdadeiras, está “habitada” por 1.000 figurinhas Lego, demorou cinco semanas a construir e vai fazer parte da exposição.



BIG in New York
The Storefront for Art and Architecture will be opening an exhibition titled The Copenhagen Experiments, on October 2nd. This presentation will be centered on five main projects by architectural studio BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group). Five contemporary visions that portray a new breed of urban architecture, exploring innovative housing typologies.
The work of Bjarke Ingels is one of the most refreshing architectural practices of the current decade. His projects are interesting for their particularities that are both local – specific of regional background, market realities, urban expectations and so on – and global in consequence, as its open project methodologies are infused of complex and universal elaboration.
The Copenhagen Experiments will feature: the extensively published VM Houses; the MTN – Mountain Dwellings housing block; the SCALA; the LEGO Towers and the KLM – The Clover Block, which I’ve presented on the blog recently.
The exhibition will be open until November 24th. The lucky ones staying in New York during that period shouldn’t miss this opportunity to visit the Storefront. As for the rest of us, we’ll have to find some compensation by watching the video of the making of the LEGO Towers model; it was built with 250.000 pieces of Lego, it’s “inhabited” by 1.000 Lego people, took over five weeks to build and will be present at the exhibition.
