Langdon Reis Zahn: competição internacional para novo centro cultural em Bodø, Noruega

O município de Bodø, na Noruega, está a promover uma competição internacional para o projecto de arquitectura de um novo centro cultural que contempla uma biblioteca pública e uma sala de concertos. O concurso decorre em duas fases distintas, tendo já sido revelados os vencedores da primeira ronda. Quatro equipas foram premiadas, três das quais irão prosseguir para a fase final.
O estúdio Langdon Reis Zahn, composto pelos arquitectos Ross Langdon, Ana Reis e Matthias Zahn, foi uma das equipas seleccionadas. A sua proposta tem vindo a receber reconhecimento pelo conceito ambicioso e evocativo de um desejo de transformação cultural, apresentando uma relação forte e integrada entre os novos edifícios e o ambiente urbano pré-existente. Os volumes projectados exploram as ligações visuais com a frente marítima, «como rochedos sobre a água», e os espaços intersticiais estabelecem as comunicações entre as várias actividades recreativas, culturais, comunitárias e comerciais, presentes no local.

Langdon Reis Zahn: design competition for new cultural centre in Bodø, Norway
The city council of Bodø, in Norway, is promoting an international competition for the design a cultural centre comprising a new public library and a concert hall. The competition features two separate phases, the first of which was recently completed. Four teams were awarded with the first prize, three of which will proceed to the final round.
Studio Langdon Reis Zahn, created by architects Ross Langdon, Ana Reis and Matthias Zahn, is one of the selected teams. Their proposal is receiving recognition for its distinguishable concept, presenting a strong and integrated relationship between the new buildings and the pre-existing cityscape. The proposed volumes explore the visual connections with the waterfront, «standing like rocks in a stream», and the interstitial spaces are shaped to establish the connections between the recreational, cultural, communal and commercial activities.

Álvaro Siza: Fundação Iberê Camargo

Inaugurado no final do mês passado, o edifício da Fundação Iberê Camargo situa-se junto ao rio Guaíba e está implantado num lote exíguo parcialmente envolto por uma encosta íngreme. O novo museu é marcado pelo grande volume vertical a que corresponde o espaço de exposição de três pisos, de onde se destacam braços suspensos em betão branco – com alguma ressonância nos devaneios de “concreto armado” de Lina Bo Bardi. É o primeiro projecto de Álvaro Siza construído em território brasileiro, tendo sido premiado com o Leão de Ouro na Bienal de Arquitectura de Veneza de 2002.

Álvaro Siza: Iberê Camargo Foundation
The new building of the Iberê Camargo Foundation is sited in a narrow plot, nearby the Guaíba River. The museum is mainly defined by its vertical volume where the exhibition rooms are located, from which are raised suspended, undulating arms in white concrete – somewhat resonant of the iconic concrete reveries of Lina Bo Bardi. This is the first project by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza built in Brazilian territory and was honoured by the Venice Architecture Biennale with the Golden Lion award in 2002.

De volta

Estive um pouco mais atarefado do que habitual com a vida lá fora, o que motivou a interrupção forçada da actividade aqui no blog. Ficam as minhas desculpas. Estou de volta com uma boa quantidade de material por publicar. I’ve been a little bit busier than usual with my life in the real world, which prevented me from posting in the last couple of weeks. Sorry about that. I’m back now with a lot of blogging material. World Science Festival

Está a decorrer em Nova Iorque o World Science Festival, uma celebração de quatro dias dedicada à exploração científica que tem como um dos seus principais promotores o físico Brian Greene.
O programa de eventos é simplesmente extraordinário e todos aqueles que, como eu, não podem estar presentes, devem ficar atentos às novidades publicadas no World Science Festival blog bem como ao acompanhamento online feito pelos membros do TEDBlog.
Fica a indicação, como curiosidade, para um debate agendado para esta tarde com o tema Science of Morality. Participa, entre outros oradores, o neurocientista português António Damásio, num evento em que se reflecte sobre como a compreensão científica da moralidade, do certo e do errado, pode ser influente na actuação da sociedade.

World Science Festival
The World Science Festival is undergoing in the city of New York. It’s a four day celebration dedicated to the scientific exploration and discovery, created by theoretical physicist Brian Greene.
The program is simply overwhelming. If you can’t attend in person, stay tuned to the online coverage on the World Science Festival blog and on TEDBlog.
A special highlight goes to today’s debate on the Science of Morality featuring, among other speakers, the Portuguese neuroscientist António Damásio, discussing the ways in which the scientific understanding of morality may influence society.

Wendell Burnette: Maryvale Community Center

O projecto do Centro Comunitário de Maryvale / Biblioteca de Palo Verde é um exercício em contenção arquitectónica. Está tão enraizado no seu contexto e é tão despido de grandes gestos formais que sobressai como exemplo do que pode ser conseguido através de escolhas racionais e adequadas de design.
Concebido pela firma Wendell Burnette Architects, este equipamento público tem como elementos principais dois blocos idênticos: a instalação da biblioteca e um ginásio. A simplicidade dos volumes é determinada pela sua textura pura. Uma superfície envidraçada contínua ao nível térreo reforça a proximidade visual entre espaços interiores e exteriores. A parte superior de ambos os edifícios é envolta em lâminas de aço inox de acabamento industrial, conferindo uma expressão sólida e linear.
Existem muitos pormenores complementares de desenho que revelam preocupações com aspectos ambientais, no que respeita à poupança de energia, à utilização de materiais reciclados e recursos renováveis. Mais interessante, esta arquitectura revela enorme discernimento quanto ao tipo de decisões que se podem tomar durante a fase de projecto, quanto à adequação entre custo e benefício, entre a expressão e o propósito.
Uma arquitectura que está conscientemente determinada em providenciar um ambiente enriquecedor, onde o hardware não é a preposição dominante. Cuja intenção não é imperar mas servir.

Wendell Burnette: Maryvale Community Center
The project for the Palo Verde Library / Maryvale Community Center is a delightful exercise on architectural restraint. It’s so deeply rooted in its context and so devoid of visual gimmicks that it really stands out as an example of what can be achieved through rational and adequate design choices.
Conceived by Wendell Burnette Architects, this public service facility is mainly composed by two equally scaled buildings: the library installation and a gymnasium. The simplicity of the volumes is determined by its pure texture. A continuous glass surface on ground level reinforces the visual proximity between internal and external spaces. The upper portion of both buildings is enveloped in mill finish stainless steel, conveying a solid and linear expression.
There are many interesting complementary aspects to the design that reveal great concern with environmental issues regarding energy savings, recycled materials and use of renewable resources. Most interestingly, its architecture reveals a great discernment as to the kind of choices one can make during the design process, as to the adequacy between cost and benefit, between purpose and expression.
An architecture that is consciously determined to provide a fulfilling environment, where the hardware is not the dominant preposition and is intended not to overcome but to serve.
