Uma educação de elite

The elite like to think of themselves as belonging to a meritocracy, but that’s true only up to a point. Getting through the gate is very difficult, but once you’re in, there’s almost nothing you can do to get kicked out.

The Disadvantages of an Elite Education: um professor da Universidade de Yale escreve sobre as desvantagens de uma formação superior demonstrando como é mais fácil ultrapassar as barreiras étnicas do que as diferenças de classe. O autor, William Deresiewicz, discorre sobre algumas debilidades da educação académica, em particular sobre a tendência para a descriminação e o proteccionismo institucional que perverte a meritocracia em prol do favorecimento colegial.

The Disadvantages of an Elite Education: a professor from Yale University says it’s easier to overcome ethnical differences than those of class. The author, William Deresiewicz, goes through some of the frailties of the academic instruction model, most noticeably for the dangers of discrimination and institutional protectionism that undermine a true merit-based culture.

Novidades no blog

Como alguns podem ter reparado o blog sofreu recentemente uma alteração de estrutura. Ainda que as coisas pareçam semelhantes, ocorreram alterações consideráveis no código-fonte com vista a introduzir «posts» expansíveis.
Assim, a partir de agora, «posts» mais longos (com múltiplas imagens) serão apresentados em versão curta na página inicial; sendo ampliados clicando no link disponível.
Os «posts» abrem sem necessidade de recarregar a página – tornando o acesso ao texto integral muito mais rápido.
Também vamos ter imagens mais largas: com a largura da barra de texto principal. Reparem que o Blogger formata automaticamente as imagens para um tamanho mais pequeno, por isso as novas imagens serão suportadas por um outro servidor – não que vocês tenham de se preocupar com estas coisas.
De qualquer forma, todas estas são alterações recentes. Por favor indiquem caso encontrem alguns erros no vosso «browser», para que eu possa corrigi-los o mais imediatamente possível. Obrigado a todos!

Latest news
As some of you may have noticed I’ve recently updated the blog’s structure. Although things look the same, there have been some noticeable code changes in order to introduce expandable posts. So, from now on, longer posts (with multiple images) will look smaller on the main page; and you’ll be able to expand them clicking the indicated link.
The good news is that the post will expand without reloading – making full-post access a lot faster.
I’m also posting larger images from now on, as wide as the main text column – notice that Blogger resizes images automatically to a shorter format, so images will be supported by a different server – not that you have to worry about these things.

Menos é Mais: Bares de Gaia

Situado na margem sul do rio Douro, esta pequena unidade urbana serve a função de café-restaurante e esplanada. Trata-se de um pavilhão compacto projectado por Francisco Vieira de Campos e Cristina Guedes (Menos é Mais) que se distingue pela coesão do seu conceito estrutural e arquitectónico. O sistema construtivo em favo de abelha – em módulos hexagonais constituídos por lâminas de aço – torna-se o padrão formal para a textura interna e externa do edifício.
A eficiência do design revela-se na sua leveza, reduzindo as estruturas de suporte vertical ao mínimo e assim resultando uma maior transparência. O resultado final é singular pela sua qualidade abstracta e potencial expressivo de invisibilidade e opacidade, podendo estar aberto à luz como tornar-se impenetrável.

Menos é Mais: «Bares de Gaia» / Café-restaurant
Standing by the southern shore of the river Douro, this small urban unit serves the function of café-restaurant. It’s a compact pavilion designed by Francisco Vieira de Campos and Cristina Guedes (Menos é Mais) that’s most noticeable for its cohesive architectural and structural concept. The «beehive» construction system – in hexagonal modules of solid steel – becomes the formal pattern for the building’s external and internal texture.
The efficiency of the design is also revealed by its lightness, reducing vertical structures to a minimum and allowing greater transparency. The final result is striking for its abstract quality and expressive potential for invisibility or opacity.

Este centro empresarial de construção recente situa-se na localidade de Soutelo, em Vila Verde, tendo sido programado para vir a fazer parte de um mais vasto parque tecnológico a edificar na sua proximidade. Para Manuel Graça Dias e Egas José Vieira, esta circunstância representou uma oportunidade para desenvolver um edifício identificável, capaz de gerar um sentido de lugar num território actualmente omisso em referências.

Manuel Graça Dias + Egas José Vieira: Office Complex in Vila Verde
This recently built office complex is located in the town of Soutelo, in Vila Verde, and is expected to become part of an expanding business park to be raised in the surrounding site. For Manuel Graça Dias and Egas José Vieira, this circumstance presented both the need and the opportunity to develop a signature building, a thoughtful architecture that could set a new sense of place in a territory currently lacking identifiable references.

A prática colaborativa de Manuel Graça Dias e Egas José Vieira estende-se por mais de duas décadas. Muitas vezes catalogados de irreverentes e polémicos, os seus projectos sempre acarretaram um olhar crítico sobre a arquitectura portuguesa contemporânea, com as suas especificidades culturais e contingências próprias. Neste caso particular, a necessidade de ultrapassar as limitações de um orçamento reduzido motivou uma estratégia de design orientada para a definição de uma linguagem mais marcante. A construção disposta em “L” está revestida por uma textura em mosaicos azuis e brancos, reforçando o sentido de escala e a aparência inesperada do edifício. A entrada principal, localizada no perímetro exterior da intersecção dos dois módulos, é reforçada pela decomposição dos seus volumes próximos. Esta imprevisibilidade está presente em vários momentos da arquitectura, nas múltiplas janelas com direcções distintas olhando diferentes vistas da paisagem, bem como na elevação do edifício num dos topos revelando o suporte estrutural como parte integrante do desenho arquitectónico.










The collaborative practice of Manuel Graça Dias and Egas José Vieira extends for over two decades. Often labelled as provocative and irreverent, their projects have always retained a critical outlook on Portuguese architectural history, with its cultural specificities and economic contingencies. In this particular case, the need to overcome a constricted budget prompted a design strategy aimed at defining an impressive architectural expression. The “L” shaped structure is patterned with a chequered texture of white and blue tiles, maximising the building’s sense of scale and joyful appearance. The main entrance, located in proximity to the joint of the two built masses, is reinforced through the close deconstruction of the intersecting volumes. This quality of unpredictability is present throughout the building, in the multiple windows with different directions facing different views of the surrounding landscape, as well as in the construction’s elevation across the site, overtly revealing its structural walls and columns as elements of architectural design.
