«An Obsessive Compulsion towards the Spectacular»: Rem Koolhaas levanta algumas questões importantes sobre o declínio do domínio intelectual ocidental no campo da arquitectura, perante a afirmação da China e do Médio Oriente como pesos pesados da economia mundial. As manifestações imprevisíveis de urbanidade nas nações do Oriente estão a promover novas linguagens de arquitectura que irão inevitavelmente contaminar a nossa realidade.
Koolhaas questiona também a ideia de «sustentabilidade» enquanto categoria de conotação política. Uma observação acertada quando se verificam tantos projectos vestindo-se de verde - «a sustentabilidade tornou-se um ornamento», diz ele. As suas asserções sobre o Dubai e a queda da cidade Europeia são, no entanto, mais questionáveis. O que pensar do futuro destas megacidades do Oriente quando o fulgor económico que alimenta o seu espectacular crescimento se extinguir – em especial no Médio Oriente, actualmente sentado no topo da crise energética mundial.

«An Obsessive Compulsion towards the Spectacular»: Rem Koolhaas raises some disturbing questions about the declining Western intellectual dominance in the realm of architectural ideas, upon the rise of China and Middle East as driving forces of the world’s economy. The unpredictable manifestations of urbanity in Eastern nations are promoting new languages of architecture that will inevitably contaminate our own.
Koolhaas also questions «sustainability» as a politically charged category of architecture. It’s a spot-on remark when you start to see so many projects dressing up in green - «sustainability has become an ornament», he says. His assertions on Dubai and the fall of the European city are, however, debatable. It’s disquieting to think what will happen to these megacities of the East when the economic momentum that’s feeding their spectacular growth slows down – most noticeably in the Middle East, currently sitting on top of the world’s fuel crisis. Koolhaas is always stimulating though and you shouldn’t miss to read the full interview.

OA abre concurso para alteração de imagem

A Ordem dos Arquitectos abriu recentemente um concurso para mudar a sua imagem. Este procedimento assinala os 10 anos de existência da instituição, comemorando também os 60 anos da realização do primeiro congresso dos arquitectos portugueses. O regulamento está disponível para consulta online.
Está também a decorrer o concurso para a redacção do Jornal Arquitectos, a revista trimestral da Ordem.

Uma educação de elite

The elite like to think of themselves as belonging to a meritocracy, but that’s true only up to a point. Getting through the gate is very difficult, but once you’re in, there’s almost nothing you can do to get kicked out.

The Disadvantages of an Elite Education: um professor da Universidade de Yale escreve sobre as desvantagens de uma formação superior demonstrando como é mais fácil ultrapassar as barreiras étnicas do que as diferenças de classe. O autor, William Deresiewicz, discorre sobre algumas debilidades da educação académica, em particular sobre a tendência para a descriminação e o proteccionismo institucional que perverte a meritocracia em prol do favorecimento colegial.

The Disadvantages of an Elite Education: a professor from Yale University says it’s easier to overcome ethnical differences than those of class. The author, William Deresiewicz, goes through some of the frailties of the academic instruction model, most noticeably for the dangers of discrimination and institutional protectionism that undermine a true merit-based culture.

Novidades no blog

Como alguns podem ter reparado o blog sofreu recentemente uma alteração de estrutura. Ainda que as coisas pareçam semelhantes, ocorreram alterações consideráveis no código-fonte com vista a introduzir «posts» expansíveis.
Assim, a partir de agora, «posts» mais longos (com múltiplas imagens) serão apresentados em versão curta na página inicial; sendo ampliados clicando no link disponível.
Os «posts» abrem sem necessidade de recarregar a página – tornando o acesso ao texto integral muito mais rápido.
Também vamos ter imagens mais largas: com a largura da barra de texto principal. Reparem que o Blogger formata automaticamente as imagens para um tamanho mais pequeno, por isso as novas imagens serão suportadas por um outro servidor – não que vocês tenham de se preocupar com estas coisas.
De qualquer forma, todas estas são alterações recentes. Por favor indiquem caso encontrem alguns erros no vosso «browser», para que eu possa corrigi-los o mais imediatamente possível. Obrigado a todos!

As some of you may have noticed I’ve recently updated the blog’s structure. Although things look the same, there have been some noticeable code changes in order to introduce expandable posts. So, from now on, longer posts (with multiple images) will look smaller on the main page; and you’ll be able to expand them clicking the indicated link.
The good news is that the post will expand without reloading – making full-post access a lot faster.
I’m also posting larger images from now on, as wide as the main text column – notice that Blogger resizes images automatically to a shorter format, so images will be supported by a different server – not that you have to worry about these things.

Menos é Mais: Bares de Gaia

Situado na margem sul do rio Douro, esta pequena unidade urbana serve a função de café-restaurante e esplanada. Trata-se de um pavilhão compacto projectado por Francisco Vieira de Campos e Cristina Guedes (Menos é Mais) que se distingue pela coesão do seu conceito estrutural e arquitectónico. O sistema construtivo em favo de abelha – em módulos hexagonais constituídos por lâminas de aço – torna-se o padrão formal para a textura interna e externa do edifício.
A eficiência do design revela-se na sua leveza, reduzindo as estruturas de suporte vertical ao mínimo e assim resultando uma maior transparência. O resultado final é singular pela sua qualidade abstracta e potencial expressivo de invisibilidade e opacidade, podendo estar aberto à luz como tornar-se impenetrável.

Menos é Mais: «Bares de Gaia» / Café-restaurant
Standing by the southern shore of the river Douro, this small urban unit serves the function of café-restaurant. It’s a compact pavilion designed by Francisco Vieira de Campos and Cristina Guedes (Menos é Mais) that’s most noticeable for its cohesive architectural and structural concept. The «beehive» construction system – in hexagonal modules of solid steel – becomes the formal pattern for the building’s external and internal texture.
The efficiency of the design is also revealed by its lightness, reducing vertical structures to a minimum and allowing greater transparency. The final result is striking for its abstract quality and expressive potential for invisibility or opacity.
