A infra-estrutura da informação digital criou uma nova paisagem de percepção. Algo que vai, lentamente, erodindo a apreensão da fronteira entre as pessoas. Entre as culturas. E, no entanto, as fronteiras persistem e definem o que somos e o modo como nos ligamos, ou desligamos, uns dos outros.
Pensava nisto enquanto via, finalmente,
Babel de Alejandro González Iñárritu. O filme tem uma espécie de qualidade centrípeta, uma força interior que transcende as particularidades das realidades distintas que ali se inscrevem. É, em grande parte, acerca da compreensão dessas fronteiras que nos dividem. E carrega consigo um sentimento de inquietação que traduz bem o fio condutor da nossa situação contemporânea. Algo que se revela com uma clareza transcendente quando Chieko se despe para um desconhecido. A sua história é aquela que aborda mais explicitamente essa busca de ligação, incapaz de acudir à rejeição do mundo exterior. Incapaz de estabelecer relações, as fronteiras de Chieko são de uma natureza diversa. Ela perdura num mundo de silêncio. Ela é o monstro, o freak.
Os seus limites não são os da cultura ou da nacionalidade. São antes de linguagem e da sua ausência. E, assim, detendo-se despida de pé em frente a um estranho, Chieko encontra um gesto inesperado. Pois que ele reconhece a sua dor e, ao fazê-lo, valida a sua própria existência.
Talvez seja reconhecível que a dor exerce um papel importante na compreensão da situação humana no mundo. E ainda que fosse simplista dizer que ela é a causa de todas ligações e desencantos deste filme de Iñárritu, é ainda assim uma força motriz das suas dinâmicas que se abismam tantas vezes de um sentido de tragédia inevitável. No entanto, olhando daquela varanda sobre Tóquio onde Chieko encontra um derradeiro contacto humano, o mundo parece tornar-se um lugar menos perturbador. Um lugar onde a revelação talvez seja ainda possível, e dela uma frágil forma de transcendência.
Endless flight
The digital information infrastructure has created a new landscape of perception. It slowly erodes the sense of frontier between people. Between cultures. And yet, the frontiers are there and they ultimately define who we are and how we connect, or disconnect, with each other.
These thoughts came into my mind as I finaly watched Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel. The film seems to have this centripetal quality, a driving force that transcends the particularities of the different realities that lie underneath. It is very much about the understanding of those boundaries that divide us. And it carries a sense of disquietude that, I wonder, is a strong measure of our contemporary situation. Something that comes along with a transcending clarity as Chieko undresses to a stranger. For her story is the one that’s most explicitly about that urge for connection, unable to surpass the sense of rejection. Unable to relate, Chieko’s frontiers are of a different nature. She lingers in a world of silence. She is the monster, the freak.
Her limits are not those of culture and nationality. They’re about language and its absence. And so as she stands naked in front of a man unknown she comes across an unexpected gesture. For he recognizes her pain, and in doing so, he validates her.
It is true, perhaps, that pain plays a strong part in the understanding of the human situation in the world of today. And although it would be simplistic to say it is the source of all connection and disconnection in Iñárritu's film, it comes along as a driving force that's at times overflowing with a sense of inevitable tragedy. And yet, looking from that balcony in Tokyo where Chieko ultimately finds human contact, suddenly the world seems less unresting. A place where revelation is still possible, and from it, a fragile form of transcendence.
